Jhu is higher ranked for many (but not all) things but they are roughly same tier. My friend recently started a phd at umich and it could not be more black and white. The students are accepted for jhu, then another. From my (warped) perspective, duke was a happier school. 100% agree school spirit is not a thing here.
Jhu research is largely funded by nih(national institute of health). As a result, much of the research there has some medical applications and focus.
